In the framework of World Water Day, Aquafondo, the Water Fund for Lima and Callao, launched Guardians of Water, an awareness campaign that bets on creativity, experience and emotional connection to strengthen the culture of water care from childhood.
As an organization, we believe that raising awareness about water involves not only sharing information, but also creating thought-provoking experiences. Therefore, we designed an intervention that combines the language of cinema with an unexpected experience: we brought together children and their families for a special screening of the film Rango, whose story revolves around a community facing water scarcity.
During the screening, attendees experienced a key moment: they received bottles of water that they could not open. Water was there, visible and close, but inaccessible. This simple gesture became a powerful metaphor that opened an honest conversation about the value of water and the importance of not taking it for granted.

“Caring for water in a city like Lima, located in a desert and at risk of water scarcity, is a challenge that involves us all. With this experience we want each person to take away a clear message: water care begins at home and we can all be Guardians of Water, as are the communities in the upper watersheds and the Nature-Based Solutions that we promote from Aquafondo,” said Mariella Sanchez Guerra, executive director of Aquafondo.
Creativity at the service of water culture
At Aquafondo we are committed to new ways of communicating. Through Guardianes del Agua, we use tools such as storytelling, film and immersive experiences to connect with new generations from the emotional and the everyday.
We are convinced that communication can be a key tool to promote sustainable cultural change. It is not only about informing, but also about generating moments that invite us to stop, think and act.

A context that calls for action
This campaign is taking place in a challenging scenario. Various projections indicate that, due to climate change, in the next 40 years Peru could have only 60% of the potable water currently available. This scenario reinforces the need to promote a culture of responsible water use today.
Our commitment
Aquafondo is a multi-sectoral articulation platform that works for the conservation, recovery and sustainable management of water in the watersheds that supply Lima and Callao. Through projects, research and awareness initiatives, we seek to strengthen water security and promote a more conscious relationship with this resource.
With Guardians of Water, we reaffirm our commitment to involve new generations in this mission, convinced that creativity, education and experience can be powerful tools to inspire real change.
This initiative is part of an audiovisual campaign that we have been disseminating through our digital platforms. In it we share the reactions of the children and the reflections that emerge from this experience, demonstrating the power of emotions to generate learning.
