Academia is a strategic ally in generating knowledge and proposing solutions to the country’s water challenges. With this conviction, Aquafondo accepted the invitation from the Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR) to participate as a partner in the VI Environmental Law Moot Court Competition, a university-based simulated trial contest whose 2025 edition addressed glacier retreat, the vulnerability of communities, and nature as a subject of rights.
As part of the benefits offered to participants, in 2026 we designed a training program for the winning team and finalists, aimed at complementing their moot court experience with technical and legal tools applied to water management.
Learning about water security
The activities began with welcome remarks by Andrés Dulanto, Dean of the Faculty of Law and Economics at the Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR).
More than 20 participants attended the first virtual workshop, where we explored the fundamentals of water security, the factors that put it at risk, and the relationship between water and society.

From concept to action
In a second stage, we held an in-person workshop on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), where we shared the approaches we implement to address water insecurity in Lima.
Helmut Olivera, Director of the Environmental Litigation Clinic at the Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR), highlighted the importance of aligning efforts between academia and civil society to strengthen the training of professionals committed to environmental protection.
Both workshops included a legal-focused session, in which we analyzed public policies and international intergovernmental agreements related to water, climate change, biodiversity, and sustainability.

Internship in San Pedro de Casta
The training program concluded with an internship in the peasant community of San Pedro de Casta. The winning team, made up of five female students, experienced firsthand the environmental and water-related benefits of our projects focused on the rehabilitation of amunas and qochas, as well as the conservation and protection of high-Andean wetlands.
We conclude this collaboration with the certainty that shared knowledge helps shape professionals who are more committed to the country and its water resources. Aquafondo and the Universidad Científica del Sur (UCSUR) will continue strengthening their partnership to create new opportunities where academia and civil society work together toward water security in Lima.
