We participated in a global dialogue on water quality and water resilience

At Aquafondo, we participated in the International Conference on Water Security: Addressing Emerging Threats to Water Quality, organized by the Florida International University (FIU) and the Organization of American States, in collaboration with the UNESCO Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme.

The international conference, held on May 20 and 21, 2026, in Washington, D.C., brought together scientists, government authorities, private-sector representatives, and experts from various countries to discuss emerging challenges related to water quality, water security, and resilience in the face of climate change.

Our Executive Director, Mariella Sánchez Guerra, participated as a panelist in Special Session 1: Mobilizing Financing for Integrated Water Management in Latin America and the Caribbean, a forum focused on exploring how governments, development banks, companies, philanthropic organizations, and international institutions can mobilize financing to address urgent challenges related to water quality and integrated water resources management.

The session was moderated by Greg Watson, Director of the Biodiversity and Natural Capital Unit at the Inter-American Development Bank, and also brought together representatives from the Fundación Empresas Públicas de Medellín, FyrstGen, and Sawyer Products to exchange experiences on financial innovation and partnerships for water.

During the panel, key topics were addressed, including blended finance, green and blue bonds, impact investing, results-based financing, and public-private partnerships to mobilize capital toward projects related to water quality, wastewater treatment, watershed restoration, and water resilience.

Mobilizing financing for integrated water management

The discussion focused on three central challenges: identifying which mechanisms and partnerships have proven most effective in mobilizing investment for water-related projects; understanding the main barriers that prevent these initiatives from becoming financially viable; and designing innovative mechanisms capable of generating measurable environmental, climate, public health, and community outcomes while simultaneously strengthening long-term water security.

In this international forum, we shared how, through the Water Fund model, we have promoted private-sector participation in water security initiatives, demonstrating that trust is also built through governance, transparency, and institutional consistency.

We highlighted that having clear procedures and strong governance mechanisms has been key to positioning ourselves as a trusted platform for investment, facilitating partnerships that make it possible to finance and implement projects aimed at strengthening water resilience and improving water quality.

At Aquafondo, we firmly believe that sharing experiences and lessons learned in international forums strengthens partnerships and accelerates the implementation of innovative and collaborative solutions for water security in Peru and across Latin America.
